HUNDREDS more senior doctors are taking early retirement after a clampdown on multimillion pound pension pots.

The Daily Telegraph said almost 1,000 GPs and consultants called it a day last year, compared with 384 ten years ago.

It comes after changes to pension rules, with the tax free allowance falling from £1.8 million in 2012 to £1 million.

Some senior doctors facing hefty tax bills have said it is not worth staying on. Others have gone part time.

It’s adding to a shortage of doctors.

At least 138 surgeries have closed in the past year, affecting around 500,000 patients.
