Hyundai Motor launches Santro in India at a price of Rs 3.89 lakh


In a bid to make a strong comeback in the entry car segment, South Korean car maker Hyundai Motor India has launched its much talked about small car Santro at an aggressive price ex-showroom New Delhi.

By pricing it at an introductory price of Rs 3.89 lakh to Rs 5.45 lakh ex-showroom New Delhi for the first 50,000 customers for manual transmission,Rs 5.18 lakh to Rs 5.46 lakh for automated manual transmission variant, Rs 5.23 lakh to Rs 5.65 lakh for CNG, Hyundai will force competition to take notice and adjust prices for their entry car offerings accordingly.

Hyundai Motor plans to sell 10,000 units of Santro per month and is eyeing over 25% market share in the entry car segment.

The company has already received bookings of over 23,500 units in the last couple of weeks since bookings were opened ahead of the festive season. Santro is already booked for three months production.

Y K Koo, MD, Hyundai Motor India told ET the compact car segment accounts for the half of Indian passenger vehicle market.

“The entry car segment is the most important segment of the compact car market in India and we had a limited presence since 2014. The launch of the new Santro will help us in participating in this critical segment and help us grow our volumes,” added Koo.

Developed at an investment of $100 million over the last three years, the new Santro has been built on K1 platform and powered by a 1 and a 1.1 litre petrol engine along with a factory fitted CNG option.

The Santro will also equipped with the in-house developed automated manual transmission to offer ease of driving.

Led by the new Santro, Hyundai Motor India plans to sell 5.55 lakh units this calendar year.

Since Santro’s launch two decades back, Hyundai Motor India has sold over 1.8 million cars world wide.

While the immediate focus is on the domestic market, Hyundai Motor India intends to kick-start exports from 2019 with the vehicle planned to be shipped to South Africa, Middle East and Latin America.

The car boasts of many first in the segment features like rear air conditioning vents, rear parking camera, 17.64 cm of touch screen multi media system with voice recognition.

The vehicle comes with Smart Phone Connectivity with Apple Car Play, Android Auto and Mirror Link.

The car also has improved significant notches higher on safety with the 63% of the vehicle architecture is built on advanced high strength steel.

The vehicle already meets the pedestrian safety norms and it comes with ABS with EBD and drivers airbag as standard.

Available in 7 colours, the new Santro delivers 20.3 kilometres to a litre on 1.1 litre petrol engine and a similar fuel efficiency on the automated manual transmission. On the CNG, Santro delivers an efficiency of 30.48 KMs per kg, in ideal test conditions.

Retaining its tall boy stance, the new Santro comes with spacious cabin and a boot size of 235 litres.
