Automotive enthusiasts have been racing cars for more than a century: on circle tracks and road courses, dragstrips and streets, salt flats and dry lakes, up mountains, and down beaches.
In these days of COVID-19 caution and quarantine, it’s almost hard to believe we were cruising through Detroit’s TCF Center with thousands of fellow automotive enthusiasts just a few weeks ago. There, we took in the sight of approximately 800 cars and trucks at the 68th Detroit Autorama.
The 2020 Detroit Autorama included practically every style and type of specialty automobile. Muscle cars, hot rods, and even race cars flooded the floors of Detroit’s convention center. Arguably, every Autorama car comes to compete. Some seek to earn audience attention, others aim for the coveted Ridler Award. The race cars at Autorama, however, are built just as much to compete on the track as at the show. Race on Sunday, sell on Monday? How about show on Monday.
These drag cars, road racers, and more aren’t just capable performers; they’re also stunning works of automotive art. Custom bodywork and beautiful paint jobs abound, as our massive gallery below shows. Go on and click through. Whether you’re a fan of drag racing, autocrossing, or endurance racing, you’re sure to see something at Autorama that piques your interest.
