WESTFIELD — The City Council voted 9-4 last week to accept a grant for vehicle charging stations, after a discussion about whether electric cars deserve a subsidy.

Councilor Richard K. Sullivan Jr., a member of the Finance Committee, proposed accepting the $380,521 payment from the Massachusetts Electric Vehicle Incentive Plan to Westfield Gas & Electric. Sullivan said that WG&E General Manager Thomas Flaherty had spoken with the committee about the grant. He said WG&E will put up a matching contribution of $143,000, and with the grant the funds would take care of installation, maintenance, software and a five-year contract for nine electric vehicle charging stations.
