India’s decision on 5G companies should be independent: Huawei India CEO

Huawei has called upon the Indian government to take an independent decision on whether to allow it to participate in the upcoming 5G trials and subsequently in deployments of the next-gen technology in the world’s fastest growing telecom market. Speaking to ET’s Danish Khan, Huawei India CEO Jay Chen said his company is committed to making long-term investments in India, including into local manufacturing and will fully comply with all rules. Edited excerpts:

You were recently given 5G spectrum to showcase your use case at the recent India Mobile Congress. What is the status for Huawei at the 5G trials and deployment?

The Indian government, companies and customers all have their full confidence in Huawei. Similarly, we are also confident with regards to our prospects in India. We understand that the Indian government will make its independent and level-playing field decision beneficial to India at the right time.

Have you received any communication from the Indian government on 5G participation?

We have given a commitment that we will do long term investments in this market. We will be fully compliant with all rules and regulation. It is not about 5G or 4G, but to the entire market and the government. We have our longterm strategy for this market.

How has the business been for Huawei in India this year so far?

This is a very challenging year for the industry. Not only for Huawei, but almost all OEMs (original equipment makers), with telcos facing a very big challenge. This year, I see a decline in the capex of the operators. But after the industry comes back on the right track, the capex will come back. We are waiting for the situation to turn positive. The minister has already given the message that very soon, we will have some reforms.

Can you throw some light on Huawei’s India manufacturing plans? You had recently shut local manufacturing, and are now relying only on imports.

We are very open to having local manufacturing, not only 2G, 3G, but also 4G. We are also open to that. We are studying the new policy.
