In reflecting on “environmental injustice,” Houston’s own Marianne Williamson delivered one of the more striking lines of during Tuesday’s Democratic presidential debate.
Responding to a question about what the candidates would do to make sure another Flint water crisis doesn’t happen again, the Bellaire High grad told the Detroit audience, “Flint is just the tip of the iceberg.”
She noted that communities of color and disadvantaged communities across the country are suffering from “environmental injustice.”

“This is part of the dark underbelly of American society,” she said during a round of applause, then eliciting a phrase that rang true for some viewers while giving others a name for their fantasy football team.
“The racism, the bigotry and the entire conversation that we’re having here tonight, if you think any of this wonkiness is going to deal with this dark psychic force of the collectivized hatred that this president is bringing up in this country, then I’m afraid that the Democrats are going to see some very dark days.”
Immediately after, the phrase “dark psychic force” generated some search interest on Google Trends.
Health care, immigration, climate change and foreign policy were just some of the issues the candidates tackled Tuesday evening. A second debate featuring another crop of 2020 Democratic presidential candidates will be held Wednesday evening on CNN.
