More than a dozen daring women kicked off the New Year by braving chilly ocean temperatures for a good cause.

On a windy and rainy New Year’s Day, the OBX Women’s Adventure Club sponsored its second annual Polar Plunge on Jan. 1 at the Ocean Bay Boulevard Beach Access. The event was a fundraiser for Interfaith Community Outreach (ICO), which provides assistance to individuals facing a temporary emergency crisis.

Despite the dreary weather and churning ocean waves, the smiling and enthusiastic group sprinted into the surf for a quick dip — whether that meant dipping in a toe, venturing in up to the waist or completely ducking under the waves. Kill Devil Hills Ocean Rescue was on duty during the event.

Organizers said that so far, the group had raised $850 for ICO through the event but will continue to collect donations through Jan. 8. The event was held in memory of Shane Miles, who Anderson said was a friend and honorary male member of the adventure club.

Miles, a resident of Manteo, passed away in March after battling cancer. Adventure Club President Stephanie Anderson said the ICO provided assistance to him and his family during his chemotherapy.. Miles was a well-known and respected runner on the Outer Banks.

“Today my heart is so full,” asserted Anderson following the Jan. 1 Polar Plunge. “We had fun while raising money for a great cause. The energy I feel from these amazing people is a start to the New Year that can’t be beat.”
