Introducing ‘Meanwhile,’ an Illustrated Column That Underscores the Overlooked

For eight years, my visual storytelling series “Meanwhile” has highlighted overlooked people, places and things that I’m curious about and believe are worthy of our attention. I’ve published a book of these stories, “Meanwhile in San Francisco,” and on the back page of The California Sunday Magazine, my column has examined subjects from prison hospice programs to rockets to nonagenarian besties.

My pieces are an unusual combination of journalism, social work and illustration. I go places, draw from life on the spot, talk with people at length and use their own words to tell true stories.

Starting Nov. 11, “Meanwhile” will be a regular part of the Sunday Business section of The New York Times. Each week, I’ll explore the rich story behind an everyday object, familiar place or uncelebrated face — and the effect on our lives, the economy, policy, the environment and more.

The first installment looks at the curious rise (and huge sales) of tallboy beer cans. Coming soon: items that relate to death, sushi, civic identity and so much else.

I’d love to hear your tips and suggestions. You can find me at wendy@wendymacnaughton.com, and on Instagram at @wendymac.
