JD Sports boss Peter Cowgill is to be handed a one-off £6 million cash bonus as the company prepares to debut on the FTSE 100.

The sportswear retailer has recommended that Cowgill, 66, be given the special payment as he has not received any long-term awards over the company’s past two financial years.

He has also not been given any pension contribution payments since 2013.

Cowgill has been executive chairman for 15 years.

The business enters the FTSE 100 in next month’s reshuffle after its share price soared by almost two-thirds over the past year.
