JUNK food hardens and thickens arteries faster than previously thought, scientists warn.
The condition, atherosclerosis, is the main cause of heart attacks and strokes.
Tests on mice found two types of bad cholesterol were the culprits — LDL (low density lipoprotein) and oxidised LDL.
The US rodents were given a well-balanced diet or fast food-style. The second group quickly developed stiff arteries.
The University of Illinois team said: “To our surprise, a very small amount of oxidised LDL dramatically changes the cell membrane structure.”
