Kangaroo Kids Education to expand chain of schools, preschools

NEW DELHI: Kangaroo Kids Education, which runs the eponymously named preschools and Billabong schools will be expanding its chains of schools and preschools, said chief executive Seshasai KVS.

The company presently has 100 preschools on a franchise basis, and this will become 350 in the next 3-4 years, said Seshasai. The company has 25 franchise schools, and 4 schools it owns, and this number is planned to go upto at least 50, said Seshasai. An investment of Rs.80-100 crore will be made to open at least 10-12 of schools owned by the company, he said, adding that they could finance it through their own cash flows.

The company is debt-free and profitable, said Seshasai. He said he current economic slowdown presented an opportunity for them, as land could be procured at cheaper prices.

For preschools, the company is targeting the top 30 cities in the country by population size, while for schools, it would focus on metro cities. The CEO said that parents in metros were more keen on “holistic” education, which focused on soft skills like team-building and leadership, and not just rote learning, or learning for competitive exams. The schools run on CBSE, ICSE or IGCSE boards.

The company is also looking to expand to countries in the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council), Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Sri Lanka through a franchise model. It operates preschools in Qatar and UAE and has both a preschool and school in Maldives.
