Avionero uses AI-techniques to make it easier for people to find flights, especially for flexible travelers. Ever had 2-3 days, or more, in flexibility for a trip? Ever been sitting on a flight search site changing dates and repeating searches to find out when it would be best to fly? Use Avionero instead, we make all of that a lot easier!

For introduction about us. I’m Lars Kristensson, a Swede who was previously architect at momondo, with a background as AI-specialist in the game industry. While my co-founder Anton Tyulenev is one of Russia’s most talented interaction designers, who left his job as Lead Designer at Art Lebedev Studio to do Avionero and change the flight search industry instead.

How did you get the idea to Avionero?
That’s a long story. In short, I took a job as software architect ten years ago at Travelstart, and then discovered how unsatisfying online flight search sites really are. Back then there seemed to be no awareness of the end user of the sites at all. Even if that awareness has increased today, most sites are still based on old technology, forcing a lot of unnecessary work on the end user. I wanted to change that. I wanted to make it a lot easier for people to find trips, and not only for the ones who already have a preset destination and date in mind, but also those are who have a bit of flexibility and who are traveling for the joy and pleasure of it.

How difficult was the start and what challenges you had to overcome?
Online flight search is an extremely competitive industry, so the main challenge was to make people believe that we could actually make a difference. To get a chance to prove that we have the technology that we claim that we have and to show that we can actually do things better – a lot better! The industry is also very conservative, so the support from the industry itself has been very limited. The ones who does support us are the end users, the ones who has really come to see the value and benefits of what we are doing.

Who is your target audience?
In broad everyone who is ever looking for a flight, but in particular those who has a bit of flexibility. People who travel for the joy of it. People who are looking for a personal or a family vacation. Those who has spent hours and hours on flight search sites, trying to find something suitable.

Those who has ever been sitting with some kind of notes while they are planning their trips. Flexible travelers.

What is the USP of your startup?
We have a unique search technology that allow us to do searches a different way than all the rest. We also combine that with a much more modern approach to user interface and experience. For example we are not in our search result just listing the cheapest alternatives, but we are trying to serve you the flights that are most likely to be relevant to your particular conditions. Another thing that a lot of people appreciate are the tabs on our site, which allows you to both keep your searches and run multiple different searches in parallel.

If you for example a planning a vacation and are looking for a job trip at the same time.

Can you describe a typical workday of you?
Sitting in front of my laptop, attending online meetings, going through mails, mining and analyzing different kinds of data, reading books, constantly looking for ways to improve.

Where do you see yourself and your startup Avionero in five years?
We will hopefully have shaken up the industry, showing them that they can neither neglect the needs of their users or treat them as badly as many flight booking sites do today. We have hopefully helped increase the transparency in the industry and pushed the technology of the industry as a whole a bit forward – because it’s really needed!

What 3 tips would you give other Start-up founders on the way?
Knowledge and having the right working partners are key. Your strength is the strength of your team and its ability to cooperate. The total knowledge, creativity and intelligence of the team is then what defines your potential. Also stay humble to facts and your own failures. Don’t hesitate to admit when you’ve been wrong, but learn from it, find out how things actually are and then proceed.
