Letter: More thoughts on recent news stories – Chico Enterprise-Record

When she saw a story in the New York Times that murder rates recently spiked to the highest levels in 50 years, former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany was quick to jump on Twitter and blame Joe Biden. Trouble was, the statistics were from 2020, when her former boss Donald Trump was in charge. More recent numbers show that murder rates have actually declined since Biden took office.

— Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, as a born-again deficit hawk, refused to raise the debt ceiling. He seems to have conveniently forgotten that the debts the government owes are not for current spending, they are payments due for decades of over-spending from politicians from both sides of the aisle, including $8 trillion added during Trump’s presidency (when McConnell was Majority Leader). Refusing to pay your bills doesn’t make you fiscally responsible, it makes you a deadbeat. At least “tax and spend” Democrats attempt to pay for their programs, unlike “borrow and spend” Republicans.

— An analysis by MarketWatch showed that since June, the COVID death rate in dark red counties (at least 70% voted for Trump) is almost five times higher than the death rate in dark blue counties (fewer than 32% voted for Trump). Tragically, the GOP’s politicization of vaccines and masks is literally killing their own voters. But hey, I’ll bet horse de-wormer sales are way up in those red counties!
