Living on Dash

Two People from Radically Different Countries Living on Cryptocurrency

Portsmouth, NH, August 27, 2018 – Dash, the leading peer-to-peer digital currency for payments, is sharing recent experiences of two people in different economic conditions living off of Dash. Meet Joel Valenzuela, a cryptocurrency enthusiast living in New Hampshire in the US, and Eugenia Alcalá Sucre, an entrepreneur from Venezuela.

For the past three years, Valenzuela has been living entirely off of Dash to test out the viability of decentralized money.

“I always had a keen interest in sound money that wasn’t under the control of any one entity, and when I heard you could be your own bank with cryptocurrency, I wanted to try it to see if that was true.”

Thousands of miles away, Alcalá is also living off of Dash. With the severe inflation in Venezuela, she found it a necessity to move to cryptocurrency. She believes in Dash so much, she is the founder of Dash Caracas, an educational nonprofit dedicated to spreading knowledge and use of cryptocurrencies in Venezuela.

“I began paying for things in Dash since September 2017 when I organized the first Dash conference in Venezuela.”she said. “That’s when I first spoke to entrepreneurs about Dash and they started to agree to sell goods and services to me using this cryptocurrency. Not everyone at first agreed to do that, but in time, more entrepreneurs and merchants have learned how to use Dash as a payment method.”

Dash is one of the most widely-used cryptocurrencies in the world. With more than 2,400 businesses listed as accepting it for payment on popular merchant site DiscoverDash. There are over 1,000 businesses in Venezuela with 700 in Caracas. That means about one Dash merchant for every 4,285 people in Caracas. In New Hampshire, there are 76 merchants with 27 around the city of Portsmouth or about one for every 785 people.

DiscoverDash includes large online retailers such as Overstock. To fill in the gaps, services such as Bitrefill sell gift cards for Dash to platforms such as Amazon, Hotels.com and eBay.

The ability to convert Dash into gift cards makes it easy to get goods and services, but living on Dash can require some extra planning in New Hampshire. In Venezuela, Dash can be a significant step up from traditional payment methods, as paying with bolivars is difficult with hyperinflation. As a result, cash is scarce and debit cards have very low spending limits. In Venezuela where it is almost impossible to make a large purchase like a refrigerator in one transaction, it would take several days of wire transfers to be able to complete the payment.

Both Joel Valenzuela and Eugenia Alcalá Sucre are available for interviews.
