Local News Black history month lives on through facebook group Jeddy Johnson 6:19 PM, Feb – WKBW-TV

BUFFALO, (N.Y.) — Buffalo’s African American history is a rich one. Historic greats like W.E. Dubois, Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass have all stepped foot on our native land and most people, don’t even know about it.

“At the time I grew up, a lot of the history of black Buffalo that was once booming and at its exuberance kind of faded away,” Buffalo native Michelle Ragland said. So in 2014, she decided to bring those stories back into the spotlight by creating a Facebook page dedicated to black histories in the Buffalo and Western New York area.

“We were here. We were a part of the history in Buffalo,” Ragland said. “And, we just want to be represented.”

The Facebook page has close to 3000 members and well over one thousand posts. Ragland herself posts on the page daily.

“I can go way back like 100 years or so and say this is what happened here in Buffalo and this person’s footprints were walking up Michigan Avenue,” Ragland said. And by keeping these black histories alive on Facebook, she believes future generations will never be left wondering what their ancestors did in Buffalo.

I present history 365 days, so its not just one month that is dedicated to African American history here in Buffalo,” Ragland said.

On the Facebook page, you can find posts about Harriet Tubman, Jesse Clippers, and locals in the area making history day by day.
