Benchmark indices registered a sharp fall in Friday’s late morning deals.

The S&P BSE Sensex was hovering around 40,650 levels. YES Bank (down 7%), State Bank of India (down 3%), and Tata Motors (down 2%) were the top laggards in the Sensex pack. Asian Paints and Kotak Mahindra Bank (both up 1% each) gained the most.

The broader Nifty50 index was around 11,980 levels.

The Nifty sectoral indices were trading largely in the red. Nifty PSU Bank index dipped the most 3 per cent followed by Niftu Auto index which was down 1 per cent.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap index was down 100 points, or 0.65 per cent, and the S&P BSE SmallCap index slipped 65 points, or 0.5 per cent.
