Mars bombshell: Why Elon Musk hopes for Italian restaurant on Red Planet

Musk is the face behind numerous tech companies, including SpaceX, Tesla, Neuralink, The Boring Company and OpenAI. In 2015 he gave a talk to Stanford University, where he was asked by DFJ General Partner Steve Jurvetson how he saw the future panning out. One of the areas he was quizzed on was Mars and Musk had some interesting visions.

He said: “The first challenge is just getting there, that’s what SpaceX is working super hard on.

“We’re figuring out how to get a large number of people and cargo to Mars.

“I think we’ve got something that works at a fundamental physics and economic level, so it’s just a question of figuring out the design.

“I’m excited about how it’s coming together, once we get the transfer solved, I then think we’ll open up a number of opportunities for people on Mars, like the Union Pacific railroad to California.

“The opportunities after that range from everything you can imagine, like opening the first Italian restaurant on Mars.”

Musk went on to justify the claim, adding: “Somebody’s got to do it and it would be kind of cool, you’d need an iron refinery too, we’d need to repeat the entirety of history.

“There would also be things that are unique to Mars.

“But we got to get that Union Pacific railroad first to get the entrepreneurs there and set up an environment to allow them to create companies.

“Once we are there a lot of exciting things can be done.”

Musk then explained how he believes Mars will become habitable in the near future.

He continued: “In the beginning, people would live in glass domes, but over time we would terraform Mars and make it like Earth.

“I think there will be a lot of super-exciting things that are hard to predict, just like when they were building the Pacific.

“So for SpaceX, our job is to figure out how to get there, otherwise nothing else matters.

“Once you get there, we have a lot that can be done.”

He finalised by discussing how the Red Planet will be governed.

He concluded: “From a government standpoint, the government of Mars will be up to the Martians.

“But I think we would probably have a direct democracy, rather than a representative democracy.

“When the United States was formed, it was impossible to have a direct democracy, even sending a letter took weeks.

“So you couldn’t vote directly on issues.”

In July this year, Microsoft invested $1billion (£823,825,000) into Musk’s AI venture that plans to mimic the human brain using computers.

OpenAI said the investment would go towards its efforts of building artificial general intelligence (AGI) that can rival and surpass the cognitive capabilities of humans.

CEO Sam Altman said: “The creation of AGI will be the most important technological development in human history, with the potential to shape the trajectory of humanity.

“Our mission is to ensure that AGI technology benefits all of humanity, and we’re working with Microsoft to build the supercomputing foundation on which we’ll build AGI.”
