MEITY to award women entrepreneurs in the software products space


NEW DELHI: The government is planning to seek out women entrepreneurs who have done exemplary work in the area of software products. The awards constituted by the ministry of electronics and IT will highlight the work done specifically by women founded and run companies in the areas of artificial intelligence, Internet of Things and Virtual Reality among others.

Awards will be also be given to the start-up doing the most impactful work in the social sector along with a new age company doing work in the area of agriculture, healthcare and water management.

According to Sixth Economic Census released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, women constitute only around 14% of the total entrepreneurship in the country which means that there are only 8.05 million women out of the total 58.29 million entrepreneurs.

“The idea is to award women who have built great software products and through them inspire more women to come forward and join the entrepreneurship journey,” said a government official aware of the project. The government has recently come up with a draft policy for software products in an effort to create boost the software products space in the country. Meity has partnered with IT industry body Nasscom for the awards, for which close to 650 nominations have been received.

The jury for the awards included names such as Snapdeal CEO and Founder Kunal Bahl, Saurabh Srivastava of TiE, Debjani Ghosh, president of Nasscom, along with Ajay Sawhney, secretary Meity among others.

The awards will be given out on Monday by minister for electronics, IT and communications Ravi Shankar Prasad during the launch of the startup hub. ET had reported last week that India has set up a hub for startups, which will act as a platform to connect with incubators, accelerators, mentors, and eventually, angel funds and venture capitalists.
