Andrew Fechner was unemployed nearly a year when he made a radical move: At age 42, with young twin boys to support, he borrowed $19,000 for tuition and enrolled in a 13-week Manhattan coding boot camp. The former cable-television programming executive hoped to launch a new career as a software engineer.
