Ministry orders NIA probe into a hoax call to DIAL

NEW DELHI: Union home ministry has ordered an NIA probe into a hoax call by a Chennai resident to Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) in his bid to stop his wife from leaving the country. The caller, later identified as Nasrudeen (28), had called up DIAL on August 9 this year, to inform that a lady namely Zabina has reached Delhi International Airport to leave for Dubai or Saudi Arab and she can cause explosion in the flight.

This will be the second case to be investigated by the NIA under the newly amended Anti- hijacking act. A businessman from Mumbai, Birju Salla, was convicted with life imprisonment early this year under the new provisions of the Act. Salla had left a printed note claiming there were 12 hijackers aboard in a Jet Airways Mumbai-Delhi flight forcing it to land in Ahmedabad in October 2017. His intention was merely to ensure that his girlfriend moves to Mumbai after this scare.

Under the new provisions, even a false threat is an offence where the person may face life imprisonment. According to the 2016 Anti Hijacking Act, any person who commits the offence of hijacking shall be punished with death where such offence results in the death of a hostage or of a security personnel or of any person not involved in the offence.

The case against Nasrudeen was initially probed by the Gurugram police that registered an FIR at Udyog Vihar police station. According to the details of the preliminary investigations, Nasrudeen and Zabina got married in 2017 at Chennai where the accused ran a garment stitching business. Few years after the marriage, two had disputes over financial issues.

Zabina, according to police, wanted to settle abroad and earn better. On August 8, 2019, while Nasrudeen was on the way back to Chennai from Sitamarhi in Bihar, Zabina informed her on phone that she was leaving to foreign country for a better life. “The accused made all out efforts to stop her but she did not agree. Finally, Nasrudeen looked for Delhi Airport number on the internet and made the hoax call,” said an official.

The hoax call created a huge panic at Delhi International Airport creating chaos among various security agencies which resulted in temporary suspension of operations of International flights. DIAL informed the Airport Operations Control Centre (AOCC) which then contacted Nasrudeen seeking details of Zabina. “He also provided the mobile number of Zabina, using which the security agencies tried to trace her but could not reach her. The police then contacted her on the mobile number on which she confirmed that she is in Delhi and planning to leave the country,” the official added.
