Mercedes has released official images of the new Mercedes EQA undergoing winter testing in northern Sweden. The brand also confirmed that the GLA-based fully electric compact SUV will make its full debut before the end of 2020.
Mercedes CEO Ola Kallenius has formerly described the EQA as a “love child” of the GLA, and while the details of the car remain hidden behind camouflage, the overall proportions – and the near-identical window line – show that the pair will be closely related aesthetically.
However, the pair are likely to be separated by aerodynamic features necessary to eke every last mile of range from the VW ID.4 rival’s body; a smoother front grille and bumpers are almost certain to feature.
Mercedes says that the aim of the arctic testing programme is to evaluate the EQA’s thermal battery management (EV range can be adversely affected by cold temperatures) and the ability to charge in cold weather. The testing images follow on from a teaser image, which revealed the car in profile for the first time.
The German brand initially previewed the EQA model back at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show with the Concept EQA. A compact three-door, measuring 4,285mm in length and 1,180mm in width, it was slightly shorter but wider than the current A-Class.
We now know that the production version of the EQA will morph into a crossover, rather than following the concept’s hatchback form. However, much of the show car’s styling is expected to make it through to the large five-door production crossover.
The concept featured an intricate headlight design that’s meant to represent the wound copper of an electric motor, and a ‘virtual front grille’ that can change its display depending on which of its modes the car is running in.
It also previewed a technical setup that’s likely to be more closely matched by the production model. It uses a pair of electric motors – one at each axle, delivering four-wheel drive.
The total system output can vary depending on how big a battery is installed (and thus effect the price and spec of the EQA in question) but Mercedes says the most powerful version available will have more than 268bhp. There’s more than 500Nm on tap, too, giving the car a 0-62mph time of about five seconds. Depending on the battery configuration, Merc claims a figure of around 250 miles.
The concept car also had two operating modes – Sport and Sport plus – which alter the front/rear torque distribution. In Sport mode the front grille shows a horizontal ‘wing’, while Sport Plus switches the display to vertical struts, in the same style as AMG’s Panamericana radiators.
