New Yorkers are Facing a Training Gap for Technology Jobs

By the looks of things, technology jobs are coming back to New York City. All of the biggest technology companies, including Amazon have abandoned their plans to open up a headquarter campus over a year ago. A lot of local workers in NYC could miss out though because they are not receiving the training they need for their careers. This is of course, according to a study that has been done by the Centre for an Urban Future. The study has echoed one of the main concerns of a deal that is going to clear the way for a new Amazon office.

The tech wealth and even good jobs are going to bypass New Yorkers. These natives would then be left struggling with the downside and this is higher housing prices and even living costs too. Closing the opportunity gap in the tech economy would really require tons more initiatives and it’s not certain as to whether or not this can be done. The tech jobs that are not going to be affected include casinos and online betting. When you look at the UK online betting industry you will see that this has been affected by various tech crunches, but so far things look to have recovered well.

Tech Courses

Training in technology courses run from 15 to 19 weeks. When you look at recent years you will see that it has grown far beyond training for support jobs. Now more and more jobs are being added for cybersecurity, cloud computing and also software engineering. 90% of students are members of minority groups and over 60% have a high-school degree. Per Scholas students at the Bronx are in their 20’s and 30’s. Their work experience has been a lot to do with restaurants and retailing too.

Per Scholas

Per Scholas seems to be an exception. Over 370 tech and training programs are being offered across the city and a lot of them are being catered towards non-profit organisations. They are also for continuing education courses. Less than 19% of them give graduates the chance to go onto mid-level and advanced jobs. They range from programmers to data scientists. The lengthy report has examined high school programs and it is going to serve as a guide to bring the benefits of the tech economy to various minority groups. The goal is to try and see what is being done way more clearly. At the end of the day, it is truly striking to see how many career-ready programs there are but at the end of the day, it’s also important to take into account some of the issues that the tech industry is having. If this is not done properly then it could lead to even more problems later down the line and this wouldn’t be good for anyone. Only time will tell what the future is going to hold but right now things look to be progressing for the better and this is great news overall.
