Nintendo Switch Lite: What Features Are Missing? : TECH – Business Times

Nintendo is expected to release a new model of its flagship console, the Switch Lite. Unlike the original Nintendo Switch which is a complete console system, the Switch Lite will be limited as a handheld device only. This will give users portability without having to rely on a TV set to play some games. In order to make this happen, Nintendo is cutting on some corners and dropped a few features for the Switch Lite.

The most noticeable change with the Switch Lite is that there are no detachable Joy-Con controllers. The controllers will be embedded in the system. The IR sensor was also dropped. As well as the HD Rumble functionality of the console. Since it is designed for handheld gaming, the Lite will not feature a kickstand.

Nintendo is marketing the Switch Lite as an affordable and portable gaming alternative. In order to check the affordable part, Nintendo is cutting corners. The new Lite version of the Switch has a smaller 5.5-inch touch screen, while the standard Switch model features a 6.2-inch screen. By cutting the size of the screen, and maybe making improvements on its battery pack, Nintendo claims that the Switch Lite has about 20 to 30 percent better battery life than the original model.

The Switch Lite will now feature a true D-pad, compared that the direction buttons found on the original one. For those who want to use an external Joy-Con with the Lite, it is still compatible with the console.

As for its specs, the Switch Lite is still pretty much the same as its original model. It still has the same CPU and custom Nvidia Tegra graphics processing unit. It comes with an internal storage option of 32GB, which can be further expanded through the console’s microSD slot.

With all these limitations, it goes without saying that the Switch Lite will not be compatible with a number of games. Nintendo has yet to confirm that official list of games that will not be compatible with the Lite, but some analysts already have a rough estimate of what these titles will be.

Since the Lite does not sport HD Rumble and IR functionalities, games that rely heavily on these sensors will definitely be not compatible with the console.

The Nintendo Switch Lite is expected to hit the market on September 20. The console’s price is set to be around $200, which is $100 cheaper than the original console.
