Number of Indian students, varsities among recipients of EU-funds this year shoots up

NEW DELHI: Indian students and staff receiving scholarships from the European Union (EU) saw a sharp uptick, with 23% more being awarded the Erasmus+ scholarship and mobility grants this year, said EU and Erasmus in a press release.

Speaking to congratulate scholars, the Ambassador of the European Union to India, Tomasz Kozlowski, said, “Europe has much to offer in terms of globally ranked universities with high academic and research standards. European universities offer a unique blend of tradition and innovation, state of the art facilities and cutting-edge research opportunities.” HeKozlowski advised students to take advantage of being in Europe and learn another language, even though many courses were available in English. He also said that students should spend time experiencing the rich and diverse culture in Europe, which India and Europe had in common.

The release also said that more than 50,000 Indians were recipients of scholarships and grants from EU member states at any given point of time.

Out of the 450, 89 Indian students – 48 females and 41 males – have been awarded a fully-funded scholarship for Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree programs (EMJMD), which lets students attend universities in at least two countries in Europe. India remains one of the top five third-country recipients of scholarships from EU this year as well.

Nearly 350 students and staff from Indian higher education institutions have been selected for scholarships under Erasmus’ International Credit Mobility (ICM) program, under which recipients can spend between 3 months to a year in a European University to obtain credits, which will then become a part of their degree.

60 universities in India also received funds from the EU this year for different programs, an uptick of 13% from last year.
