Optometrist explains why women shouldn't wear mascara every day of the week

These days, most women have a daily make-up routine, which they follow to a T.

They might moisturise and prime their face before swiping on some foundation, filling in their brows and sweeping some mascara onto their lashes.

And while you might think this minimal make-up isn’t doing much harm, an expert has warned that there’s one thing you should try and avoid wearing every day.

According to Ceri Smith-Jaynes, an optometrist and spokeswoman for the Association of Optometrists, mascara can cause serious damage to your eyes.

You shouldn’t wear the stuff every day

Speaking to The Sun Online, Ceri explained how constantly wearing mascara can lead to “serious infection” and even damage the “tear film”.

She said: “Generally, any cosmetic applied around the eye area can migrate in to the eye in a matter of minutes.

“Some mascaras are particularly fibrous and will irritate some patients and some cosmetics will disrupt the coating of tears, which is supposed to cover the surface of the eye as a smooth tear film.

“If this ‘tear film’ is disrupted, the tears evaporate more quickly, and the eye becomes dry, leading to irritation.”

The expert also discussed how bottles of mascara are likely to become contaminated with the bacteria that live on your skin after a few months, increasing chances of infection.

She advised people to pay close attention to the symbol on the bottle that shows and egg timer or an open jar, with a number and letter beside it, for instance 3M.

This stands for three months and is the recommended period for which you should own the product.

After the amount of time, discard the mascara and get yourself a new one.
