BULK-buying is a great way to save – as long as you use every last item.
But one in five of us cancel out savings by chucking away items that are “off”.
So follow my guide to what you should buy more of, and what stuff is best in smaller quantities . . .
BUY WHAT YOU LIKE: If you are a fan of bulk- buying, ensure you are doing so with the brands you like, rather than just because you have seen a good offer on something random. I like easho.co.uk for top brands in bulk and big savings. The website carries a range of the most popular essentials and there is no minimum order to worry about. For example, if you love Rowntree’s Randoms, grab five pouches for just £4.49 (around 89p per pouch) — rather than the RRP of £1 per bag.
TIN IT TO WIN IT: Tinned food with a long shelf life is fine to buy in bulk and many of us rely on having a well-stocked kitchen cupboard. If you have the space, you can get 12 cans of Heinz baked beans for £5.50 (around 46p per can) online at Iceland, with a single pack of six usually costing £3.95 (around 58p per can).
DAB FAB: Many cosmetics can lose their potency, go off and collect dust, dirt and sweat if the lid is constantly on and off — so you may want to think twice about buying a huge bottle of something. I look for offers on smaller items because it also saves space. I prefer to swap the E45 500ml body lotion, £7.49, for the 200ml bottle at Boots for £4.99.
SIP HOORAY: Coffee lovers should avoid bulk-buying their favourite blend because it can lose its flavour over time. A 1kg bag of Lavazza Coffee beans is £13.75 at Sainsbury’s — but instead see how you go with their Fairtrade Italian-style coffee, 227g, for £2.30, which saves you £8.70 immediately and stops you forking out for something that will not even taste good in the long run if you do not use it quickly enough.
