The 54-year-old Canadian will be paid a symbolic $1 a year for the role after he leaves the Bank of England on January 31.

He has been at the helm of the Bank since 2013 and had planned to step down in June, but decided to stay until the end of the latest Brexit extension.

Carney will report to UN secretary general Antonio Guterres, who described him as ‘a remarkable pioneer in pushing the financial sector to work on climate’.
