Oxytocin curbs unite activist groups and drug companies in court

The Delhi High Court on Thursday admitted a public interest litigation by advocacy group All India Drugs Action Network (AIDAN) that challenged the ban on private companies making the hormone drug Oxytocin.

Oxytocin is used to induce labour in pregnant women and stall post-partum bleeding. The health ministry passed an order banning private companies from manufacturing the drug and restricting its production to state-owned Karnataka Antibiotics & Pharmaceuticals Ltd. following complaints that the drug was abused in cattle. The ban on private companies is effective from September 1.

The move has united private drug companies and activist groups, which are otherwise often at loggerheads. Mylan, a US drug maker, challenged the ban in the Delhi high court. US drug maker Pfizer told ET a few weeks ago that it has stopped making the drug.
