Pepper Content raises $4.2 million in funding led by Lightspeed India

BENGALURU: Pepper Content has raised $4.2 million in Series A funding, led by Lightspeed India, as the content services marketplace looks to expand into new categories such as audio and video content and new geographies like Southeast Asia.

The Mumbai-based startup, founded in October 2017, brings together content creators and businesses on its platform, promoting freelance or gig careers for creators.

Pepper Content says it has more than 30,000 content writers, graphic designers, language specialists and editors on its platform.

It works with over 400 customers, including Amazon, Swiggy, Paytm, Max Bupa, Apollo Hospitals and Adobe.

“Our mission is to disrupt the entire content creation industry at scale and create a stronger, high quality, and more organized ecosystem for content creators,” said Anirudh Singla, cofounder and CEO of Pepper Content. “Imagine us being able to build virtual content teams for any company globally.”

Pepper Content said creators on its platform have produced over 100,000 pieces of content and have earned over $400,000 in fees over the last two years.

In the last three months alone, it has added over 150 enterprises and SMEs as customers and is witnessing 25% month-on-month growth in revenues, the company said.

“We are proud to partner with Anirudh and his team with a vision to use the Pepper market platform to enable any company around the world to source content on-demand, with high quality, and at scale,” said Dev Khare, Partner at Lightspeed India. “Not only is every company a software company these days, but every company is a content company.”

Apart from Lightspeed, a slew of angel investors, including Upwork founder Beerud Sheth, Coinbase CTO Balaji Srinivasan, Unacademy cofounder Gaurav Munjal and AngelList’s Utsav Somani also participated in Pepper Content’s Series A funding round.
