Planting of winter crops exceed last year’s level by 10%

NEW DELHI: Planting of winter crops has exceeded last year’s level by 10%, led by a 28% increase in area under pulses, according to an agriculture ministry official.

Rainfall in north India last week has created good soil conditions for planting of wheat and mustard. The official said the acreage under pulses has risen to 8.25 million hectares from 6.45 million hectares last year.

“The government is focusing on pulses production. The results are visible as farmers have sown pulses across large areas. We expect bumper crop as water storage in 123 major reservoirs is 93% of the live storage,” the official said.
