Pursued those who cheated banks, got money back: FM Nirmala Sitharaman

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday said the Centre has ensured that those who cheated banks are relentlessly pursued and money recovered by auctioning their properties is being returned to banks.

She said that while the earlier government also ran schemes, this government is working to

the people and not just giving something as an entitlement. The government has thrown away the heavy legacy problems of the previous government by clearing the burdens on public sector banks, she said.

Banks are doing good business now and we have infused ₹3.36 lakh crore to assure them of some order, Sitharaman said. “We ensure that those who have cheated the banks and gone away, they are pursued relentlessly and their properties are auctioned and the money is given back to the banks and that is happening continuously,” FM said.

‘Ensured Money Reached the Poor’

On the issues of benefits to citizens, the finance minister said, every Indian citizen deserves to have access to basic facilities without being beholden to anybody.

The finance minister said it was only in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s time when the principle of Antyodaya was taken very seriously.

“Give dignity to the poor but also give them the coverage that they so need for empowering themselves,” she said while releasing the 100th edition of the monthly analysis of Economic Cell of BJP4Karnataka in Bengaluru.

“Our approach is one of empowerment through saturation of existing schemes rather than that of entitlement,” finance minister said giving the example of the Jan Dhan Yojana.

The Centre first ensured everybody gets a bank account and became financially included and then once these accounts were Aadhaar validated, direct benefit transfer started.

So, the Centre ensured that it saved money and without leakage, it reached the poor, she added.

She said schemes like Ayushman Bharat and PM Awaas Yojna gave that dignity to the people where they can get the basic facility, like healthcare, without having to fill any papers.
