New Delhi: A record 18 startups will exhibit their technological prowess at Auto Expo 2020 in Greater Noida next month even as several established vehicle manufacturers including Honda Cars and BMW have decided to stay away from the 15th edition of the biennial motor show.

In 2018, 11 startups had participated in the expo. This time the startup participants include Okinawa Autotech, Devot Motors, Everve Motors, M2go Electric Vehicle, Omjay EV, ONB Technologies India, Sehgal Elmoto, ZN Mobility, Kabira Mobility, Charjet E-Mobility, and Raptee Energy. Most of them will display products and technology in e-mobility, a fast emerging space in the automotive world.

“Auto expos are increasingly emerging as a platform for startups to showcase their products and increase visibility of their brand among consumers as well as industry peers,” said V G Ramakrishnan, managing partner at Avanteum Partners LLP. “These are smaller firms and participating in such exhibitions gives them the opportunity to reach out, all at once, to varied stakeholders, including media personnel, they would otherwise not have.”

The global trend reflects growing engagement between startups innovating on futuristic technologies and vehicle companies keen on making use of these technologies. India’s largest auto maker Tata Motors, for example, has set up an office at Palo Alto in the US to partner with budding technology entrepreneurs to define future mobility solutions.

In fact, many automobile companies participate at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, which was traditionally organised for consumer electronics companies.

About a dozen startups that will participate in the Auto Expo from February 7-12, including Aglian Sahasra Mobility, Chheda Electricals and Electronics, Devot Motors, Everve Motors, M2go Electric Vehicle, Okinawa Autotech, Omjay EV, Sehgal Elmoto, Jitendra New EV Tech, Kabira Mobility, Rissala Electric Motors, and Raptee Energy, focus on electric two-wheelers. ZN Mobility will showcase its range of electric three-wheelers and cars, while Champion Poly Plast will have on display e-rickshaws.

Ashoka Systems and Charjet E-Mobility are involved in developing charging stations for electric vehicles while Kabra Extrusiontechnik will exhibit battery technology for EVs.

The surge in interest from startups has come at a time when players like Ford India, Honda Cars India, Toyota Kirloskar , Hero MotoCorp and Ashok Leyland have decided to skip the event.
