Remove unwanted cables: Corpn to 27 cable TV, internet cos – Times of India

Chennai: A day after a man died after a cable hanging from a lamp post got caught in his bike at Akkarai on ECR in Sholinganallur, the electrical department of the corporation has issued a circular to all the 27 licensed cable TV operators and internet service providers to remove all unwanted cables across the city. They have also been asked to look for low-hanging cables and remove them.
“We have issued a circular and will hold a meeting on Monday in this respect. We will discuss with higher officials and take a policy-level decision on this,” said a senior official. However, the official added, weekly twice, they inspected lamp posts, platforms and medians for hanging cables. “We can issue notices to them. We can also snap cables and stock in our godowns. But there is no provision to punish or penalise offenders,” said another official.
The assistant engineer from Sholinganallur told TOI that they were assisting police in the investigation of the Akkarai incident. “We have found that the cable belonged to an internet service provider. We will issue a notice to them soon,” said the official. The cable was in excess and tied to the lamp post.
The family of the victim, Mohammed Ali Jinnah, said strict action should be taken against those who leave such cables hanging from lamp posts.
A corporation engineer said they issue safety measures to be undertaken while installing such cables. “We provide permission to tie cables to lamp posts and collect rent for it as well. But we always instruct them to ensure wires are not left hanging. They should be tied and labelled with the company’s tag and concealed. We may form a committee to look into such issues,” said the official.
