Riga best-value destination for Christmas market trip

Riga’s Christmas market has been named as the best-value European destination for a festive weekend break, closely followed by Prague and Tallinn.

The annual survey, conducted by Post Office Travel Money, compares a basket of Christmas city break costs including the price of mulled wine and cakes at a Christmas market, a three-course meal, two nights accommodation plus flights, or Eurostar fares for two adults.

Retaining its top spot for the second year running, a weekend break for two to the Latvian capital’s Dome Square Christmas market came in at just under £500. Christmas in Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens in Denmark was the most expensive, costing nearly £885 for a two-night trip.

Eastern European cities Prague and Tallinn were ranked in second and third place, with the Czech capital seeing the biggest annual price fall of more than 12 per cent.

Andrew Brown of Post Office Travel Money advised people planning trips to “do their homework carefully before booking.” He added: “It’s well known that tourist staples are cheap in eastern European cities, but Berlin also looks great value for a Christmas market break this year. Closer to home, Lille is also a good option.”
