Soparing numbers of households are being sold new energy tariffs on their doorstep, new research reveals.

The number of customers who switched to a new deal following a face-to-face sales pitch rose by 38 per cent to 1.1 million in the year to October, according to analysts Cornwall Insight.

Experts fear customers could lose out by signing up without doing research.

Joe Malinowski, of comparison site The EnergyShop.com, says: ‘Door-to-door sales are more expensive than those online so it is best to check the internet for deals.’

Households are also switching by phone, with the number of people taking out a new tariff this way jumping 7 per cent to 1.6 million.

Energy companies are allowed to target customers at home, as long as the information they provide is accurate.
