Once again, the faithful trekked up Mount Rubidoux to honor the Virgin Mary.
Organized by Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine, a Catholic church on Riverside’s Eastside, the annual “Camino de San Juan Diego,” which means “Path of St. Juan Diego,” took place Saturday, Dec. 7.
Walkers began gathering early Saturday and took off on their route to the mountain, where Mass was celebrated. The Catholic feast day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, as Latinos and others refer to Mary, is Dec. 12.
The annual event commemorates the anniversary of the day in 1531 when the Virgin Mary appeared to peasant Juan Diego in Mexico. Catholics believe she told him to build a church on a hillside in what is now Mexico City. Diego was canonized as a saint in 2002.
