Samsung, after a whole world of leaks and rumours, finally launched the  Galaxy Note 10 series globally earlier this month and without further delaying it has now launched the two new Note smartphones in India. There’s no doubt that the latest Galaxy Note 10 series carries a lot of firsts for the widely popular Galaxy Note portfolio for the South Korean smartphone manufacturer.

For example, the Galaxy Note is the first super-premium smartphone/phablet from Samsung to ditch the headphone jack. Secondly, the Galaxy Note 10 has ditched the iris scanner for wanting a bigger screen. On the same line, Samsung also omitted expandable memory options, which is removing that memory card slot on the Galaxy Note 10 and the Galaxy Note 10+.

On the plus side, Samsung now has put in a massive 6.3-inches of Dynamic AMOLED on the front, graced by a single selfie shooter inside the display – yes! A punch hole. Samsung has also bumped up the base storage options from 128GB to 256GB. Also, Samsung has bundled in noise-cancelling headphones with Type-C connector from AKG. The Galaxy Note 10 (7.9mm) is also slimmer than the Galaxy Note 9 (8.8mm).

For people who are used to the Galaxy Note 9-esque design factor, it becomes a tab bit difficult at first to look at the vast expansive display with a single cutout for the selfie camera. However, all things apart, the Galaxy Note 10 is undoubtedly a stunning device. Topping off that, Samsung has put in a weirdly glitzy new shade – Aura Glow they say. The Galaxy Note 10 fills the design void which was left after Samsung had launched the Galaxy S10 series in the market. However, all in all, the Galaxy Note 10 does tick all the right boxes, or does it? We take a look.

In our very brief period which we spent with the device, here’s what we think about the Galaxy Note 10. You can also read our first look of the Galaxy Note 10+ here.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 First Impressions: Design and display

The Galaxy Note 10 gets the same screen like the Galaxy Note 10+ – 6.3-inches of Dynamic AMOLED with a whopping ~91 per cent screen-to-body ratio. Samsung seems to have genuinely cracked the idea of making beautiful phones with the Galaxy Note 10. Sure, the punch-hole camera may be a polarising design, but, all phones with no bezel makes everything look dull and similar to each other. The centre placed the punch-hole camera is the differentiating factor for the Galaxy Note 10.

Rest apart from the pretty design, the Galaxy Note 10 is a shrunken Galaxy Note 10+ with absolutely similar designs, and the centre placed punch hole camera. The overall feel of the Galaxy Note 10 is sturdy and feels good when held. However, the front and back is protective glass, and you know what they say – Glass is glass, and glass breaks. A protective case never hurt anybody, though.

The rear panel is a proper fingerprint magnet, which means you are going to have to shine it now and then. Or maybe get a transparent cover of sorts. Another change we felt was odd was the placement of the power/Bixby button. The button this time has been placed on the left which means, if you’re on any other flagship phone currently, you are going to reach out for the non-existent power button on the right bezel. We have been using the Galaxy S10+ and the Galaxy Note 9 for some time now, and we found ourselves pushing the key which wasn’t there on the right-hand side of the frame.

The Note 10 features an Infinity-O display with a centre placed cutout for the selfie camera. The Galaxy Note 10’s punch hole camera is, however, simply more at the place on the expansive display than the one on the Galaxy S10, or the S10 Plus. Resolution on the Note 10 series has to take a beating this time with Samsung deploying a QHD+ resolution, as opposed to the WQHD+ on the Galaxy Note 9. However, the Super AMOLED to Dynamic AMOLED shift means the brightness can now be dialled up to straight 1200 nits. However, Samsung decided against going for the 90Hz panel for now, but we are not complaining. Put, the display on the Galaxy Note 10 is just a beauty, and you could watch yourself go bonkers with the live lock screen wallpaper.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 First Impressions: Software and the S Pen

The Galaxy Note 10 runs on the latest Android Pie based OneUI. Although we have used the OneUI on multiple Galaxy phones now, mostly with the Galaxy S10 series and the Galaxy Note 9, we did notice a slight difference in the Galaxy Note 10 usage. Swiping through apps and switching between them was a breeze. We shall talk at length in our review of the Galaxy Note 10 and the Galaxy Note 10+.

Coming to the other major aspect, the S-Pen. Samsung did make some necessary changes with the S-Pen when they launched the Galaxy Note 9 a year back. The S-Pen then arrived with a battery of its own, a new copper coil, and Bluetooth LE connectivity. The S-Pen came with the remote function, which meant you could control certain app functions with the button.

S Pen

Cut to the Galaxy Note 10, Samsung has now put in AR gestures on the S-Pen. The S-Pen now does all the things that the Galaxy Note 9’s S-Pen could do, and much more. For example, the new S-Pen comes with a gyroscope sensor and an accelerometer which allows you to change camera modes, zoom in or zoom out with just a flick and button press. Also, the S-Pen has a bigger battery, so no more charging again and again. Although the charging period of the S-Pen was pretty quick, around 40 seconds, additionally, the S-Pen now gets new tech, and the Note 10 gets deep learning capabilities, which means whatever you write with the stylus can be converted into text. Samsung is also bringing in support for additional regional languages with this new feature.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 First Impressions: Camera

The Galaxy Note 10 comes with a triple camera system which is similar to the one of the Galaxy S10+. The performance is not very noticeable on the Note 10 when you are taking still shots. However, as it is with the Galaxy Note 10, this new series has focused on the video taking capabilities as compared to the Galaxy S10 series or the Galaxy Note 9 for that matter.

In terms of camera specs, the Note 10 features a triple camera module which is a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens, a 16-megapixel ultra-wide camera that takes 123-degree pictures, and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens that offers 2x optical zoom. The 12-megapixel shooters get additional optical image stabilisation on both of them. The Note 10 receives a single 10-megapixel shooter up front for selfies which also shoots wide-angle selfies and also utilises the Night Mode.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 design

This was all we could get and learn about the Galaxy Note 10 in our short time with the device. The Galaxy Note 10, in its first impression, offers heaps of contentment and looks promising enough. The Galaxy Note 10 could then be the game we wanted, or probably it is something else, we shall know in our full review.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 price in India is set at Rs 69,999 for the 8GB RAM and 256GB storage model. Both the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ are set to go on sale in India from Friday.
