Who seriously wants an expensive smartphone when you can have a super smart watch that does everything you want, all while looking stylish?

There’s plenty of choice out there. Samsung is storming the market with its new Galaxy Watch Active 2 – packed full of useful tech, could it become one of the best devices available to buy when it officially debuts next month?

Apple likes to think it has the best smartwatch available – and it probably did since the release of the Apple Watch Series 4 – but how does the Watch Active 2 compare?

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 vs Apple Watch Series 4 price: Which is cheapest?

The Watch Active 2 is brand new and isn’t even out on shop shelves yet, but it’s still half the price of the Apple Watch 4.

The device comes out on September 27, so there is still a little while to wait to get it. It’ll cost you £230 ($279.99 US, $410AUD) for the 40mm version. The 44mm version will be priced at £250 in the UK.

There are several offers around where you can bundle the watch with a brand new Samsung Galaxy handset, if you’re after a new phone as well.

If you want to be one of the first to pick up the Galaxy Watch Active 2, you can pre-register your interest on the official Samsung website and receive updates as soon as they go live.

The Apple Watch Series 4 is, as you would expect, much more expensive. It can be yours from £399 ($399US, $599AUD) for the 40mm version.

You might think this is a bit odd, considering the device has been out for almost a year now, and that the device is reasonably comparable in terms of features. But that’s just how Apple rolls.

Both devices are pretty much what you expect. The Apple Watch 4 is square, with rounded-off corners and a bulky haptic wheel to control it, while the Galaxy Watch Active has a circular screen with two buttons on the edge.

If you’re all about style, you might enjoy the Galaxy Watch a bit more, as it does look like a super-subtle, conventional watch, with a glossy display.

The Apple Watch does look bigger, but it therefore stands out more.

The Galaxy Watch has a 1.2″ display with an aluminium body with a rubber strap. It also has a slightly better resolution on the display – measuring at 360 x 360, compared to 324 x 324 for the Apple Watch 4.

The Apple Watch is much the same in terms of body design, and is made with either aluminium or stainless steel.

Both watches are water-resistant to up to 50 metres and are roughly as durable as each other, so it’s pretty much down to personal preference at this point.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 vs Apple Watch 4 features: What can they do?

Both watches do more or less the same thing, so again, it’s down to whichever device you like the look of or can afford.

The big push from the Apple Watch series back in September 2018 was a brand new ECG feature that lets you measure your heart rate in much greater detail. In certain countries and regions, you can even use the watch to see if you may have atrial fibrillation, a type of irregular heartbeat.

Both watches have this feature, as well as a number of other impressive fitness trackers – so if that’s what you’re into, both are good choices.

Both devices also have cool, futuristic ways to interact with their respective displays. The Apple Watch 4 has a digital crown on the right side of the device which you twist, push and pull to navigate.

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 has a digital wheel along the screen bezel which rotates to help you select what you want. To flow through the menus, you just need to slide your finger along the edge.

Apple hasn’t revealed how long the battery is on the Watch 4, but it can allegedly last for up to 18 hours on WiFi, while the Galaxy Watch 2 has a 230mAh battery that should see up to 2 days of life.
