Samsung’s New Galaxy Book S Packs An ARM Processor – Business Times

The ARM architecture revolution rages on, and it has now invaded the realm of laptop devices. Along with the announcement of its flagship Galaxy Note 10 series, South Korean tech giant Samsung also confirmed its newest laptop: the Galaxy Book S. Judging by its appearance, the Galaxy Book S looks like the spiritual successor of the now discontinued 12-inch Apple MacBook. However, looking under the hood, Samsung’s newest laptop packs quite a lot of power.

At the heart of the Galaxy Book S is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx processor, a variant of an ARM-based system-on-chip which is normally found on smartphones. Samsung claims that this new Snapdragon chipset provides 40 percent improved CPU performance, 80 percent improved graphics performance, and improved memory bandwidth compared to the Galaxy Book 2.

The Snapdragon 8cx is a 64-bit processor with eight cores. It has a standard clock speed of 1.8GHz, and a maximum clock speed of 2.84GHz.

ARM-based chipsets are famously known and revered for their superior power efficiency. The Snapdragon 8cx chipset is not an exception. Samsung claims that the Galaxy Book S has a battery life of 23 hours just on a single charge. Some tech analysts have noted that this claim should be taken with a grain of salt, especially since Samsung’s tests were no doubt performed in a controlled environment. Nevertheless, this is already a major upgrade when compared to the current battery performance of some mainstream laptops.

Another impressive feature embedded inside the Galaxy Book S is its integrated LTE support. While some have noted that Samsung should have opted for the more powerful 5G connectivity, the fact is most Snapdragon chipsets are still not engineered to have this feature.

The Galaxy Book S is expected to pick a price tag of $999 once it hits the market. With this price, customers will get an ultra-light and ultra-thin laptop with integrated support and two USB-C ports. The laptop has a 13.3-inch display, and it supports 10-point multitouch input. Two models will be available upon release, one has 256GB storage space, while the other one sports 512GB. Both models’ storage space can be expanded to as much as 1TB. It is only limited to two color options, pink and gray. The laptop runs on the Windows 10 operating system.

During the launch, Samsung’s Hassan Anjum has this to say about the Galaxy Book S, “It looks like a laptop, but it has the essence of a smartphone.”
