IT is estimated that more than four million of us have given up alcohol this Dry January.
And while this may make some of you feel less than merry, the good news is a near-five weeks off the booze saves enough money for a £218, two-night city break to Amsterdam.
Whether you are trying to save cash or just trying to be healthier, these alcohol-free drinks will save you even more (and, bonus, no need to worry about a hangover).
FIZZING GREAT DEAL: Tesco sells a delicious low-alcohol sparkling white wine, currently £2.25, down from £2.75. It is a really refreshing drink and is also one of the cheapest I have seen, compared with another non-alcoholic sparkling wine that sells for £8.99 at Holland and Barrett.
WINE WOULDN’T YOU? Still want a glass of red with your dinner? Instead of picking up a bottle of Casillero Del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon, £7.50 at Sainsbury’s, choose a bottle of its own alcohol-free red wine for £2.75. Not only will you be saving cash on a similar tasting tipple, but you will be sticking to your dry January, too.
GIN AND BEAR IT: If, like me, you love a refreshing gin and tonic, then head to Holland and Barrett, where you can snap up a 70cl bottle of Seedlip non-alcoholic Spirit Garden for £21.99, down from £25.99. It is delicious paired with ice and your favourite tonic water.
MOJITO MOCKTAIL: You do not have to pass up your favourite cocktail. Instead, why not make your own homemade mocktail that will taste just as good? To make a mojito, all you need is a tablespoon of sugar, a small bunch of mint (75p for a pack at Sainsbury’s), the juice of three limes (75p for three limes at Asda) and soda water (50p for a litre bottle at Tesco). You will make plenty with these ingredients and save at the same time, as most cocktails will set you back around £7.
