Sleep on the job, as a full-time employee

It is not always that you get to sleep on your job – and get paid for it. Which is why the American Dream is still alive, this time literally dreaming the American Dream while asleep. US mattress company Casper Sleep (probably named after the comic book ‘friendly ghost’ character) has advertised for competent nappers to be test-drivers and be living endorsements of their product line as fully paid employees.

Job requirements: ‘exceptional sleeping ability, a desire to sleep as much as possible and the ability to sleep through anything’. Sleeping in ‘unexpected settings out in the world’ may also be required. When Casper sleepers happen to be awake – their version of a coffee break – sharing one’s sleeping experience on a Casper mattress on social media is another requirement. We are yet to confirm whether Casper CEO Emilie Arel is a fangirl of Lord Kumbhakarna, who knew how to monetise sleep unlike that bum Rip Van Winkle.

For the Indian entrepreneur who still thinks like a floor manager, paying someone to do something traditionally against the grain – like remote working or sleeping to advertise sleeping products – is anathema. Which is why, perhaps, so many bright sparks from this country wake up from their innovative slumber when they go to less alarm clock-dictated economies. Casper’s dress code? Pajamas.
