Sony is docking the speed of PlayStation download times in an effort to help preserve internet capacity for other users.

According to a blog post from the tech giant, it’s working with internet service providers to slow the game speeds in the US after previously taking the measure in Europe.

‘We believe it is important to do our part to address internet stability concerns as an unprecedented number of people are practicing social distancing and are becoming more reliant on internet access,’ wrote the company in a statement.

The measure will look to mitigate the effects of an influx of online gamers driven by an ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

As people everywhere are forced to stay in their homes due to isolation measures, demand for online services, including games, has skyrocketed.

The company says that the move means that online gamers will experience ‘somewhat slower or delayed’ times but has promised that online gameplay will still be ‘robust.’

‘We will continue to take appropriate action to do our part to help ensure internet stability as this unprecedented situation continues to evolve,’ Sony’s post reads.

Sony will join other tech giants like YouTube, Amazon and Netflix in reducing the quality of their downloads in order to cope with increased demand.

As a result of the glut of simultaneous users, Netflix experienced widespread outages this week.

Thousands of reports flooded the outage-detecting site, downdetector.com,  and social media earlier this week with many reporting being unable to access the site and the app, both of which refused to load.

Likewise, rising numbers of people at home has put strain on services that rely on the internet and even the internet infrastructure itself.

In the UK, major mobile networks, including O2, Vodafone, and others went down last week as millions of British workers started to work from home.

Outages affected workers across the UK suddenly found they couldn’t make voice calls on their mobile phone and experienced spotty connectivity.

Fellow gaming titan, Microsoft also saw widespread outages of its Xbox Live service last week amid increased demand.

It’s not clear whether the company will similarly dock download times in order to cope with increased usage.
