NORMAN –For the second time this season, the Oklahoma women’s gymnastics team swept the Big 12 weekly awards, the conference announced Monday.
Senior Brenna Dowell (Gymnast of the Week), sophomore Karrie Thomas (Event Specialist of the Week) and freshman Olivia Trautman (Newcomer of the Week) were all recognized by the league for their contributions to the Sooners’ victory over North Carolina and Ball State. It’s the ninth career honor for Dowell, the first for Thomas and the third for Trautman.
Dowell was named the Gymnast of the Week for the second time this season after taking home the all-around title on Saturday. The senior, who has only competed in the all-around twice in her career, set a career high with a 39.625. Dowell added a career high on beam with a 9.925 and season highs on vault and floor with a 9.925 on each event. The Odessa, Mo native also tallied a 9.85 on bars. Dowell took home three event titles from the meet, all-around, vault and beam.
Thomas was named the Event Specialist of the Week for the first time in her career. Thomas, who transferred from Maryland in the offseason, made her Sooner debut on Saturday as she set a career high on bars. The sophomore broke the 9.9 mark for the first time in her career, taking home a share of the event title with a 9.9 in the No. 4 spot.
Trautman once again took home Newcomer of the Week accolades. The freshman tied her career high on floor with a 9.975, earning a 10.0 from one judge. Trautman led off a stellar beam rotation with a 9.875 and added a 9.8 on vault.
The Sooners will be on the road at the Metroplex Challenge Saturday, Jan. 26. The quad meet will feature Arkansas, Denver and Missouri along with the Sooners. The meet is slated for a 7:30 p.m. CT start at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
