Startups to produce medical gadgets – Times of India

Palakkad: A cluster of 10 startup units at Kanjikode industrial area will be entering into mass production of low-cost ventilators, N95 masks and other safety medical gadgets to counter Covid-19 in the state.
The Kerala government, through the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), entrusted them the task of manufacturing medical equipments for government hospitals on a war footing.
The startup units will start manufacturing once the government approves the prototype from the 10 prototypes already prepared.
A major problem faced by the health authorities is the lack of ventilators to save Covid-19-affected patients from respiratory problems since they are expensive and mostly imported. A ventilator costs about Rs 20-25 lakh. The project is being coordinated by Kanajikode Industries Forum.
Forum general secretary Kiran Kumar said, “The Super FabLab, in Kochi, under KSUM is now finalizing the design for N95 masks and ventilators. Teams comprising engineers, doctors and experts are working tirelessly to complete the design and development process. Once the designs of ventilators are finalized, a cluster of engineering units at Kanjikode industrial area will be entrusted with the task of first creating a sufficient number of prototypes for testing and validation. Once the validation is complete and design is finalized, they will start mass manufacture of the equipment as per the instructions from the state government.”
“Kanjikode Industries Forum is coordinating with the cluster of engineering units and preparing resources to commence production immediately after getting the go-ahead,” he added.
Forum president K P Khalid said, “The mass production of ventilators, masks and other emergency medical gadgets are taken up not for profit but just realizing the cost of production, as a responsibility of the industry towards the society in this hour of our fight against Covid-19 pandemic”
