Taco Bell is now offering some managers six-figure salaries and offering paid sick days for first time


Taco Bell is upping the ante in its pay and benefits, offering some managers six-figure salaries and giving workers paid sick days for the first time.

Starting Jan. 1, Taco Bell began offering workers in all its corporate-owned restaurants at least 24 hours of paid sick time a year, the company announced Thursday.

Paid sick time was not offered before, and employees need to be on the job for 90 days to be eligible for the benefit.

Some Taco Bell managers will also get a raise later this year. Calling it a test, the fast-food chain says that it will pay general managers of some company-owned restaurants $100,000 annually. Typically those supervisors make from $50,000 to $80,000.

“Through these initiatives, Taco Bell aims to enhance restaurant performance, employee satisfaction and support recruitment and retention,” the company said in a statement.

Fast-food restaurants have been a focal point of a nationwide movement by workers demanding a minimum wage of $15 and other workplace protections.

Those chains are also under pressure to deliver healthier options as more Americans demand more nutritious meals when they dine out, a trend that has fueled the popularity of fast-casual eateries like Dig Inn, as well as a soaring interest in plant-based foods.

Taco Bell, which launched a vegetarian menu last year that included items like a black bean wrap, says it will try to make such foods simpler to order. And in a nod to reducing it’s environmental footprint, it says that in the next five years, all its food packaging will be recyclable, compostable or able to be used for other purposes.
