Angwin, whose vision was to bring an investigative and data-driven
approach to the coverage of technology and its impact on society, was fired back in
April. Nearly the entire editorial staff went with her.
Angwin and the staff are back. The team revealed that they have continued working over the past three months to prepare for an
official launch at the end of the year, according to a New York Times report.
The Markup also has a new president: Nabiha Syed, a former associate
vice president and general counsel at BuzzFeed. Evelyn Larrubia, previously executive editor at public radio program “Marketplace,” is the new managing editor.
The Markup
had raised more than $23 million, with donations from Craig Newmark, the billionaire founder of Craigslist.

In a letter sent to Newmark in April, Angwin said she was forced out by Sue
Gardner, The Markup’s executive director and a founder. Gardner has since stepped down.
Angwin has worked as a reporter and investigative journalist at The Wall Street Journal
and ProPublica. She was part of a team at WSJ that won a Pulitzer Prize.
According to the Times, The Markup‘s business will rely in part on reader
donations.
