The list of challenges facing Britain is daunting, even without the added pressures of a coronavirus pandemic. It must grapple with the consequences of Brexit, work out how to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2050, find ways to deliver on its promise to “level up” the regions and grapple with the consequences of the technological revolution that is disrupting so much of the economy.

Each of these on its own would be a momentous challenge for any government, requiring decisions that could determine the destiny of the country for generations.
