CAPSSANA, refillable stainless steel capsule for Nespresso coffee machines

Please introduce yourself and your startup Capssana to our readers!
My name is Rivo Cortonesi and I’m a mechanical engineer specialized in fuel injection fluid dynamics in fast diesel engines and in the battle against environmental pollution, including noise pollution. When developing the CAPSSANA capsules I sought to make the most of my expertise in the field of pressurized liquid fluid dynamics. I am married, I have a daughter and a son, and I live near Lugano in Switzerland.

Capssana is currently incorporated into my Engineering studio with a team of three collaborators, a Development manager, a Communication manager and a Sales Manager. Currently the Capssana project is present on Kickstarter. If the target will be reached, Capssana will soon be able to walk with his own legs.

Otherwise it will take us a bit more, but we will go ahead anyway because I believe a lot in Capssana.

How did you get the idea to Capssana
Three years ago I started using disposable coffee-making capsules, but I realized the possible health risks. So I decided to make a reusable capsule in stainless steel, that is, without harmful elements emitted from plastics, glues, dyes, and without micro residues of aluminum and aluminized paper.

How difficult was the start and what challenges you had to overcome?
I have to confess that when I thought about resolving the problem of how to make top-quality coffee using refillable stainless steel capsules for once and for all, I didn’t think I would encounter such major difficulties. I tried a number of unsuccessful construction solutions with the help of a 3D printer, before realizing that I found myself faced with a much more complicated problem of fluid dynamics than I had expected.

Changing the shape and number of holes on the dispensing surface was not enough to ensure a good result and in the end I had to change course completely, designing an innovative component that I have called the “magic button”. It took two years to develop a new product able to emulate that of disposable capsules while doing away with the harmful elements that end up in the coffee cup.

I can now state, with absolute conviction, that my experimentation and design work has been a success.



Who is your target audience?
The Capssana market is that of private coffee consumers, those people who today drink coffee in other ways, with coffee makers, automatic machines and disposable capsules. Capssana is a synthesis of the advantages of each of these ways of producing coffee without inheriting its disadvantages and defects. Capssana refillable capsules are supplied in a kit of 3, 6 or 12 capsules in stackable cylindrical containers.

What is the USP of your startup?
Our USP can be summarized in our motto: “Capssana the pure taste of coffee”. Capssana makes it possible to drink a coffee of excellent quality that respects the health of consumers and the environment.


Can you describe your typical workday?
At the moment I dedicate my morning to my routine work, that of mechanical engineer, while in the afternoon and sometimes until late at night I am in close contact with the Capssana team: a quarter of my time I dedicate to the Communication manager, a quarter to the Sales Manger, while the other half of my time is spent in the company of the Development Manager. We are in fact planning a coffee machine for Capssana capsules. Although Capssana is compatible with Nespresso coffee machines, in 2020 we will have our Capssana coffee machine.

I can anticipate that it will be entirely made of stainless steel sheet.

Where do you see yourself and your startup in five years?
The market of Capssana is a world market. So in five years we will be many more. Our ambition is to become an established brand such as MOKA, NESPRESSO etc.

Which 3 tips would you give other Start-up founders on the way?
1- think about what you are doing and stop if something of your idea does not convince you; wait until there is another idea, in which you totally believe 
2- if in the morning is not the alarm to get you out of bed but the desire to work on your project then you are already halfway in the realization of your dream; persevere! 
3- Do not worry if you do not have the money; generally good ideas are in short supply, not money; when there are good ideas, money goes to good ideas as bees go to flowers
