This one city is best prepared to deal with electric car switchover after charging station – Express

The UK’s first fast-charging station for electric vehicles was built in the area last year and has dramatically boosted Sunderland as the most prepared area for electric vehicles.  The station has four 50kW fast chargers and two 175kW device which are enabled for super quick 350kW charging.

Sunderland had the lowest car-to-charger ratio out of anywhere in the UK with 2.8 vehicles for each charger available in the area.

Coventry has the second lowest car-to-charger ratios with a total of 3.2 electric vehicles per charger installed in the area.

Liverpool, Dundee and Newcastle Upon Tyne were revealed in the top five areas with the lowest charging ratios as Northern areas topped southern cities.

Analysis from CAT Autokeys revealed to Express.co.uk has also shown Salford, Lincoln and Norwich are some of the most prepared areas in the UK with ratios all below five vehicles per charger.

London failed to make the list but this was likely down to a high number of electric vehicles in the area compared to other towns.

Peterborough was found to be the worst region for electric vehicles as the coit had the highest vehicle-to-charger ratio in the UK.

The area has just one charging station for every 274.88 electric vehicles which make charging difficult for local owners.

Birmingham was the second highest area with 215.36 vehicles per charging station. This was followed by Kettering, Leeds and Exeter as the worst regions in the UK.

The analysis comes after Chancellor Rishi Sunak has pledged an extra £500million into extra rapid charging infrastructure.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Andy Allan, Owner of CAT Autokeys, said the  “The Government may be determined to encourage more people to purchase electric vehicles, but Parliament itself has said that poor provision of charging infrastructure is one of the biggest barriers to the growth of the UK EV market.

Electric car charging stations are dramatically falling behind demand [INSIGHT]

“We all know the benefits of zero-emission driving by now, and it’s being viewed more favourably than ever before.

“But if people are worried that there might not be enough range of charging stations for them to secure availability, this may delay them making the switch, in fear of coming into difficulties in recharging.”

Range anxiety and the fear of breaking down has left many people concerned about making the switch.

Recent analysis from LeasePlan found that insufficient charging stations were preventing almost two-thirds of prospective buyers from making the switch.

However, Boris Johnson has promised no motorist will be more than 30 miles from an electric charging station and has committed to widespread implementation of the chargers.

CAT Autokeys are pushing for a dramatic surge in electric car infrastructure to make sure no driver suffers issues with finding electric car stations to top-up their batteries.

Although the experts revealed the UK had made considerable steps to ensuring infrastructure was available to those that most needed it.

Mr Allan said: “It’s not about stating the best and worst – it’s about showing where there is room for improvement.
