Trai floats paper on discontinuing printed phone bills

The telecom regulator has sought views on whether telcos need to continue sending free printed bills to postpaid users of mobile and landline services amid growing smartphone usage and environment-related concerns around the cutting of trees for producing such bills.

In a paper released Thursday, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) said it had received representations from “industry, associations, MPs, MLAs and prominent citizens to review an extant provision of sending printed phone bills for free to postpaid customers” amid changing mobile usage patterns and environmental concerns relating to the cutting of trees for paper used in printing phone bills”.

About a decade ago, Trai had mandated telcos to provide a free hard copy of phone bills to postpaid users through its Telecommunication Tariff (46th Amendment) Order, 2008. Now it has received multiple representations to review this provision amid a “changing mobile usage scenario” with surging data usage.

Stakeholders including consumers, have till December 10 to give their views and December 24 to submit counter-comments.
